Understanding Malnutrition in Guatemala
According to the World Food Programme, Guatemala has the highest rate of malnutrition in Latin America and the Caribbean. Nearly half of the children under 5 suffer from stunting. This alarming statistic is even more pronounced among children from rural, indigenous communities.
Kevin, a bright 4-year-old boy, recently visited our clinic. He weighed just 23 pounds, which is a little over half of what an average 4-year-old should weigh.
The Severity of Kevin's Condition
Kevin's height-for-age z-score, a metric for identifying the presence and severity of malnutrition, was -4.5. His weight-for-age z-score was calculated at -3.4. These z-scores indicate severe malnutrition.
In addition to his low weight, Kevin was also noted to be anemic. This condition can significantly impact his overall health and development.
Addressing Financial Barriers
Kevin's mother shared that she did not have the funds to purchase medication. We reassured her that we had no interest in her money, or lack thereof. Our primary concern was the health of her child.
We understand that financial barriers can prevent families from accessing essential healthcare services. That’s why we strive to provide care without the burden of cost.
Providing Clean Water
Kevin and his family typically drink water from a well near their home. To improve their situation, we provided them with a point-of-use water filter. Access to clean water is crucial for preventing further health issues.

Nutritional Support
Kevin was provided with Nutri Listo, a Ready to Use Therapeutic Food (RUTF). This nutrient-dense food is designed to help children recover from malnutrition quickly and effectively.

Comprehensive Treatment Plan
In addition to nutritional support, we started Kevin on antimicrobials to address his gastrointestinal illness. Treatment for his anemia was also initiated.
We will closely monitor Kevin's progress. Our hope is that his diarrhea will resolve, his anemia will improve, and his growth will begin to normalize.
A Brighter Future
Thanks to your support, Kevin will have renewed health and renewed hope. It is heartwarming to see children like Kevin receive the care they desperately need.
The Importance of Community Support
The challenges faced by rural communities in Guatemala are immense. Yet, with the help of generous donors and dedicated healthcare providers, we can make a difference.
By improving access to high-quality healthcare, we empower families and foster healthier communities. Together, we can create a sustainable model that not only addresses immediate health concerns but also promotes long-term well-being.
